Suntory Yamazaki Distillery

Suntory Yamazaki Distillery is a Suntory whisky distillery located in Yamazaki at the foot of Mt. Tennozan, between Osaka and Kyoto. From JR Osaka Station it takes about 30 minutes to reach the nearest station, Yamazaki Station; from JR Kyoto Station it’s about 15 minutes. From Yamazaki Station, it’s about a 10-minute walk. Yamazaki has long been known as a place of famous water and even appears in the Man’yoshu. Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii selected Yamazaki from several candidate locations in order to make Japan’s first whisky. Inside the distillery, the Yamazaki Whisky Museum introduces Suntory’s history, the distillery’s craftsmanship, and the story behind the birth of “Yamazaki.” Distillery tours are also offered, making it possible to learn the production process in greater depth. After the visit, the tasting counter—where you can try a variety of whiskies and unaged spirits from around the world—is also recommended. You can also purchase distillery-exclusive whisky at the on-site gift shop.
