Taisho

Taisho Ward is one of Osaka City’s 24 administrative wards and is located on a delta formed by the Shirinashi and Kizu Rivers. Historically part of the southern Naniwa Yasoshima delta, the area began to develop after fishermen settled here during the Edo period. Land reclamation and river transport flourished, and in the Meiji era, industrialization advanced rapidly. In 1883, Osaka Spinning Company imported Japan’s first steam-powered spinning machine, leading Osaka to be called the "Manchester of the East.". Taisho Ward is also known as "Little Okinawa" due to the large Okinawan community, which accounts for about one-quarter of the ward’s population.

  • The place with the strongest Okinawan vibe in Taisho Ward is Hirao Hondori Shopping Street, known as “Thanks Hirao.” The name is said to come from a man called Hirao Yozaemon, who developed new rice fields there during the Edo period. The shopping street is about 250 meters long, and along with Okinawan cuisine, it also has okonomiyaki shops and offal restaurants—making it one of Osaka’s top shopping streets for food strolling.
