Sanno Museum

Sanno Art Museum is an art museum on the 22nd floor of Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka, showcasing the collection of the Hotel Monterey Group owner. The name comes from the fact that “Monterey” means “king of the mountain” in Spanish. The museum opened in 2009, the same year the hotel opened. It holds special exhibitions twice a year (spring/summer and autumn/winter). While the number of works on display is not large, the museum features valuable pieces you can rarely see elsewhere, including works by French painters such as Renoir and Marie Laurencin; Japanese Western-style painters who worked in Paris such as Tsuguharu Foujita and Yuzo Saeki; renowned Japanese-style painters such as Taikan Yokoyama and Shoen Uemura; and ceramics by artists such as Hazan Itaya, Kenkichi Tomimoto, and Kanjiro Kawai. With many bright, uplifting works as well as calming ones, it can be a pleasant place to rest your eyes and mind. After your visit, you might enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the hotel’s scenic restaurants. It is very easy to access—close to JR Namba Station, Osaka Metro Namba Station, and Hanshin/Kintetsu Osaka-Namba Station—so it’s a convenient stop when you have a little free time.
