Abeno

Abeno Ward is home to many popular tourist attractions, including Q’s Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in Osaka Prefecture; the Abeno Pedestrian Bridge, which won the Good Design Award in 2014; and Abeno Harukas, a famous super high-rise building. As a result, the area is known as Osaka’s third major downtown district after Umeda, Shinsaibashi, and Namba. Historically, Abeno Ward flourished as an important transportation hub in southern Osaka. Even today, major transportation lines such as the JR Osaka Loop Line, Kansai Main Line, and Hanwa Line converge at Tennoji Station, with large numbers of passengers passing through the terminal daily. Across the ward, the aging rate is relatively high at 22.5 percent, ranking fourth among Osaka’s 24 wards. At the same time, the area has developed as a relatively quiet residential neighborhood, and community-focused town planning continues with the goal of creating a long-living society and a comfortable living environment characterized by warmth and human connection.

  • The Abeno Pedestrian Bridge, spanning the busy intersection in front of JR Tennoji Station—used by about 800,000 passengers daily—was renovated in 2013 and has become a symbolic landmark of the city. If you look down at it from the upper floors of Abeno Harukas, you’ll notice it’s shaped like the letter “a.” Nearby, there’s a long-established Chinese restaurant called Furinkaku on the 9th floor of the Abeno Apollo Building; its beer garden is especially famous, and the venue includes a grand banquet hall that can host up to 400 people.
