Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum opened in 1955 with the purpose of conveying to people around the world the devastation in Hiroshima Prefecture caused by the world’s first atomic bomb drop on August 6, 1945, and the suffering of the survivors (hibakusha). Through this, it aims to help realize the abolition of nuclear weapons and world peace.
Admission costs 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for high school students, but the basement level (B1) and first floor (1F) of the East Building—where the Memorial Hall and Special Exhibition Room are located—are free areas. At the museum, visitors can learn not only from victims’ belongings and photographs and materials that convey the devastation in Hiroshima, but also about Hiroshima’s history and the current state of nuclear weapons around the world. The exhibits are designed to deepen understanding, with features such as individual video booths where you can listen to survivors’ testimonies and dioramas. The museum also engages in proactive initiatives such as hosting survivor testimony talks. Access to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum is about 20 minutes by local bus from JR Hiroshima Station, about 17 minutes by the sightseeing loop bus “”Meipuru~pu,”” about 25 minutes by streetcar, and about a 10-minute walk from the Hiroshima Bus Center.
