Okonomimura

Okonomi-mura is a food-themed park that houses 24 okonomiyaki restaurants.
Okonomi-mura’s roots go back to the postwar period, when as many as 50 okonomiyaki street stalls gathered in Shintenchi Plaza in central Hiroshima. In 1963, when Shintenchi Plaza was turned into a park, the stalls were forced to relocate, but a two-story prefabricated building called "Okonomi-mura" was built in front of the park and became a nationwide topic of conversation. It was later reborn as a high-rise building in 1992, and it remains as it is today. Loved not only by tourists and school trip students but also by locals, it is a lively and bustling place. Originally, okonomiyaki was made by dissolving wheat flour in water and grilling it with ingredients such as green onions and dried shrimp mixed in. After the war, it was improved repeatedly to make up for nutritional shortages, and this is said to be how today’s Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki was born. Access to Okonomi-mura is about a 3-minute walk from the "Hatchōbori" streetcar stop. By bus, it is about a 3-minute walk from the Hiroshima city loop bus stop "Shintenchi," or about a 3-minute walk from the local bus stop "Shintenchi," among other options.
