Aioi-bashi Bridge

Aioi Bridge was the intended target point of the atomic bomb. In reality, the bomb detonated above Shima Hospital, about 300 meters from Aioi Bridge. Built in 1932, Aioi Bridge connects the east and west banks of the Honkawa River (Old Ota River). Two years later, an additional bridge section extending south from the central part (toward today’s Peace Memorial Park) was completed. Because Aioi Bridge had the nationally rare "T" shape, it is said to have been chosen as the bombing target. The bridge suffered damage such as warped girders, partially collapsed railings, and uplifted road surfaces, but after restoration work, streetcars were running again one month later. The current bridge was rebuilt in 1983 due to deterioration. Part of the pre-rebuild bridge girder can be seen at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. Also, at the edge of the bridge on the north side of Peace Memorial Park, preserved original bridge posts bearing atomic-bomb damage remain. On the east bank near the Atomic Bomb Dome, you can also see the Aioi Bridge site monument. At night, Aioi Bridge is illuminated, offering a different atmosphere from daytime.
