Edo-Tokyo Museum

The Edo-Tokyo Museum is a spot where you can enjoy learning about the history and culture of Edo and Tokyo. Its distinctive architecture is inspired by a raised-floor warehouse: while the main escalator connects between the 3rd and 4th floors, the space between is a hollow void supported by pillars. After purchasing tickets at the general information counter on the 1st floor, head up to the permanent exhibition on the 5th and 6th floors. The permanent exhibition introduces about 400 years of Edo/Tokyo history and culture, centered on the period after Tokugawa Ieyasu entered Edo. Along with rich historical materials, the museum is known for many reconstructed models—ranging from powerful life-size reproductions to intricate 1/60 scale models that keep visitors captivated. Although it is a museum, photography is allowed inside the permanent exhibition rooms, so try taking photos that feel like you’ve time-traveled back to the Edo period. Access is convenient from JR Sobu Line Ryogoku Station (3 min from the West Exit, 7 min from the East Exit) or Toei Oedo Line Ryogoku Station (A4 Exit, 1 min).
