Ameyoko Shopping Street
The Ameyoko Shopping Street Federation refers to the bustling shopping area known as “Ameya Yokocho” or “Ameyoko,” stretching between JR Ueno Station and Naka-okachimachi Station with about 400 shops lined up. While many stores are long-established, in recent years shops run by foreign owners are said to have reached around 10%, letting you enjoy Tokyo’s diverse culture. Prices are often low to begin with, and the biggest feature is that you can negotiate prices with shop staff—making it a great chance to buy fresh foods, clothing, shoes, cosmetics, sweets, and more at very reasonable prices. There’s also plenty of food: you can eat seafood bowls or yakiniku at restaurants, or enjoy street snacks like fruit skewers and croquettes. The area is lively, drawing about 100,000 visitors per day, and around year-end it can reach as many as 500,000. The crowded scene of people shopping for New Year’s foods is a famous seasonal tradition. Access: immediately near Ueno Station on the JR Yamanote Line, Keihin-Tohoku Line, and Joban Line.
