Kimiidera Temple

Kimiidera is the No.2 temple on the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage and a famous Kannon sacred site. Since being built in the Muromachi period, it has undergone repairs many times and has been passed down to the present. The grounds have many highlights: you first pass through the "Romon" gate at the entrance, decorated with vivid carvings of peonies and chrysanthemums. After climbing the steep 231-step stone staircase "Keien-zaka," you reach the central area of the precinct, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Wakaura Bay. This spot is associated with the Edo-era wealthy merchant Kii-no-Kuniya Bunzaemon, who is said to have gained the turning point for marriage and success here—so people from all over Japan visit to pray for prosperous business, good relationships, and good fortune. In front stand buildings such as the "Rokkakudo" (hexagonal hall), "Shinbutsuden" to the right, and the "Hondo" (main hall) to the left. Along with the entrance "Romon," the impressive "Shoro" (bell tower) and "Tahoto" (pagoda) are designated Important Cultural Properties. Kimiidera is also known for late-blooming cherry blossoms, so even if you miss sakura elsewhere in spring, you may still catch them here. Transportation is convenient: JR "Kimiidera Station" is the nearest station, and it’s about a 5-minute walk from the station to Kimiidera.
