Toretore Market Minami Shirahama

Toretore Market is one of western Japan’s largest seafood markets, located in Shirahama Town. As soon as you enter, you’ll find the market-style "fresh fish corner," lined with seafood caught in the waters around Wakayama as well as freshly delivered seafood from across Japan. One especially popular attraction is the "tuna cutting show," and after the dramatic carving, you may even get to sample some. Although it’s called a seafood market, the selection is wide: fresh produce, sushi, and many other items that make it hard to choose. Ingredients bought at the market can be eaten right away at the adjacent barbecue corner. Drinks can also be ordered, making it easy to handle lunch or dinner here. If you want a quick break, you can go for market-style snacks like "scallops in butter" or "turban shells grilled in their shells," and there are also specialty sweets shops and cafes. The hallmark is simply how many eateries are gathered in one place. To work up an appetite, it’s also recommended to enjoy fishing at "Katata Ikada-zuri" (raft fishing) or at the "fishing pond" before you come. Access is easy: from JR Kisei Main Line "Shirahama Station," take a Meiko Bus for about 5 minutes to the "Toretore Ichiba-mae" bus stop—then it’s right there.
