Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a vast park of about 37,000 tsubo (roughly 122,000 m²), established to mourn the victims of the atomic bombing and to pray for lasting world peace.
It is located on a delta at the point where the Motoyasu River branches from the Honkawa River, and it had long been Hiroshima’s central downtown area since the Edo period. However, on August 6, 1945, it became the hypocenter of the atomic bomb, and everything was destroyed in an instant. After the war, development progressed from 1950, and the park was completed in 1955, becoming what it is today. Within the park are facilities such as the Peace Memorial Museum and the Hiroshima International Conference Center, as well as many cenotaphs and monuments including the Children’s Peace Monument, the Peace Bell, the Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound, and the aogiri (Chinese parasol) tree that, despite being exposed to the bomb, sprouted again the following spring and encouraged people. Across the river, the Atomic Bomb Dome is also considered part of the Peace Memorial Park. Access to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is easy: from Hiroshima Station, take a streetcar and get off at "Genbaku Dome-mae" (Atomic Bomb Dome) stop—it's right nearby.
