Miyajima Omotesando Arcade
Miyajima Omotesandō Shopping Street is an approximately 350-meter shopping street that runs from Miyajima Pier to Itsukushima Shrine and is also known as Kiyomori-dōri. The area was originally sea, but it was reclaimed in the late Edo period and became the main street as it is today during Japan’s postwar high-growth era.
Restaurants and souvenir shops line the street, and because it has a retractable roof, you can shop and enjoy street food even on rainy days. As for food, you can enjoy seafood such as oysters and conger eel, and there are also many shops selling momiji manju, one of Hiroshima’s signature souvenirs. Each shop has its own style—some bake them right at the storefront, while others offer creative flavors—so comparing them is part of the fun. For souvenirs, items like rice paddles (shamoji) made using Miyajima woodworking techniques are famous. Miyajima has long been home to skilled craftspeople who built and maintained the overwater Itsukushima Shrine, and these paddles are popular for their good usability. They are also treasured as lucky charms because they can be associated with the phrase "scooping up happiness." Access to Miyajima Omotesandō Shopping Street is about a 5-minute walk from Miyajima Pier.
