Mikasahama
Mikasahama is the name of the shoreline along the approach to Itsukushima Shrine. The shrine’s iconic Great Torii Gate also stands at Mikasahama, making it an extremely popular photo spot. A year-round recommendation is to visit at dusk. The sunset over the Seto Inland Sea is especially beautiful here, with the sky and sea turning red and the Great Torii appearing solemnly illuminated by the setting sun—truly a must-see. After the sun goes down, the Great Torii is lit up, allowing you to enjoy two spectacular views in one visit. In winter, the sunset at Mikasahama is praised as "Mikasahama Bosetsu (Dusk Snow at Mikasahama)," one of the "Eight Scenic Views of Itsukushima." Snow piling up on lanterns and pine trees adds an extra layer of atmosphere to an already beautiful dusk scene. From around April to May, you can also enjoy clam digging. The clams at Mikasahama are known for their plump, sweet taste, and the beach becomes lively with many visitors, including families. Access to Mikasahama is about a 15-minute walk from Miyajima Pier.
