Fudenosato Kobo Brush Museum
Fude no Sato Kobo is a museum in Aki District, Hiroshima Prefecture dedicated to the theme of brushes. It is located in the famous production area of Kumano brushes, which account for about 80% of Japan’s domestic brush production. Kumano brushes are designated as a traditional craft, and at Fude no Sato Kobo you can see exhibits related to brushes, ink, inkstones, and paper, as well as brush-related art works, and watch live demonstrations of brush-making by certified traditional craftsmen. The museum also holds a nationwide call for entries for "Thank You Picture Letters," and the submitted works—divided into general and children’s categories and attracting applicants across a wide range of ages—are well worth seeing. You can also join hands-on experiences such as brush-making, Japanese-style tapestry making, picture-letter workshops, and hand-painted yuzen workshops (paid). At the Art Square classes, you can learn how to create authentic works using brushes, and there are also one-day trial programs. With many corners where you can see, touch, and experience, it is widely used as a learning experience for elementary school students and more. You can also buy brushes and related goods, and there is a restaurant as well, making it possible to enjoy the place for a whole day. To get to Fude no Sato Kobo, take a bus for about 45 minutes from the Hiroshima Bus Center.
