Buttsūji Temple
Butsutsu-ji Temple is a Rinzai Zen temple in Mihara City. It was founded in 1397 by Kobayakawa Haruhei and Guchu Shuki. One of the most striking sights at Butsutsu-ji, known as one of Japan’s leading Zen training temples, is the "Butsutsu-ji Inumaki." This great tree stands before the wooden bridge leading to the main hall and is also called "Rakanmaki." It is said to have been planted by Zen Master Guchu and has been designated a Natural Monument of Hiroshima Prefecture. The Jigan Kiin Jizo-do Hall and the portrait painting "Daitsu Zenji-zo" (Color on Silk) are also designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The temple is especially popular during the fresh greenery of summer and the autumn foliage season, when visitors can enjoy spectacular scenery. In recent years, the temple has begun illuminating the grounds during the autumn leaves season, making it enjoyable at night as well. To reach Butsutsu-ji, it is convenient to take the bus from Mihara Station bound for "Butsutsu-ji" and arrive in about 40 minutes, or drive about 15 minutes from Mihara Kui IC. With parking for 100 vehicles, it is also an easy temple to visit by car.
