Kokawa Temple
Kokawa-dera Temple is the 3rd temple of the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage (Saigoku 33). Many worshippers still visit today. Its history is old enough to be mentioned in "The Pillow Book" (Makura no Soshi), and according to the National Treasure "Kokawa-dera Engi Emaki" (illustrated temple origin scroll), it is said to have been founded in 770 by Otomo no Koshi-ko. There are many highlights: the "Kokawa-dera Garden" is a National Scenic Spot, and structures such as the "Daimon" (Great Gate), "Senju-do," "Chumon" (Middle Gate), and "Hondo" (Main Hall) are designated Important Cultural Properties. In addition, the "Hondo," "Kuri" (priests’ quarters), "Gomado" (Goma Hall), and "Nuriage-mon" are designated cultural properties of Wakayama Prefecture. The Main Hall in particular is impressive and dynamic, conveying the weight of history. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom around the roughly 43,000-square-meter grounds and more than 20 halls, making it a notable flower-viewing spot. Access: take the JR Wakayama Line to "Kokawa Station" and walk about 15 minutes north along an almost straight route. There are some shops and eateries along the way, so you can stop by as you go. Goshuin (temple stamps) can be received at the Nokyo-sho inside the Main Hall.
