Yahiko Shrine

Yahiko Shrine is a shrine in Yahiko Village near the Sea of Japan, dedicated to Amenokagoyama-no-Mikoto, said to be the ancestral deity of Echigo’s development. It is affectionately known as “Oyahiko-sama,” and more than 200,000 worshippers visit each year for New Year’s prayers. In recent years, the shrine’s sacred atmosphere has made it popular as a power spot. Early mornings are less crowded, allowing you to enjoy a solemn mood. In the grounds, look for the Hidamaishi (also called the “heavy-light stone”): how heavy it feels when you lift it is said to indicate whether your wish will come true. If you have time, visiting the Yahiko Shrine mausoleum (Goshinbyo) on the summit of Mt. Yahiko is also recommended. About a 10-minute walk from the shrine is the Mt. Yahiko ropeway, which can take you to the top. There is also a free shuttle bus between the shrine and the station for convenience. Access: about 15 minutes on foot from JR Yahiko Line Yahiko Station; by car, about 25 minutes from Hokuriku Expressway Sanjo-Tsubame IC. Free parking is available, so visiting by private car or rental car is recommended.
