Kyukamura Okunoshima Passenger Ship / Ferry
Kyukamura Okunoshima is an uninhabited island in Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Also known as "Rabbit Island," it is a popular island loved by people of many generations. On this small 4.3-kilometer island, no one lives, and the only major facility is the Kyukamura resort. Because of that, you need to buy rabbit food, drinks, and other necessities before taking the passenger boat or ferry to the island. During the war, it was also called a "poison gas island" because poison gas was produced here. It is said that eight rabbits at an elementary school escaped, and the population has grown to as many as 900 rabbits. If you feed them in the morning when they are hungry, rabbits will quickly come close to you. Rather than buying food right before boarding the boat, it is recommended to bring a whole head of cabbage. Okunoshima also has a Poison Gas Museum, where you can learn about history as well. At the resort, you can enjoy a buffet, and Wi-Fi is available within Kyukamura. In summer there is also a pool, and there is a visitor center where you can enjoy nature. With many programs such as watching sea fireflies, you can have fun with an overnight stay. To get to Kyukamura Okunoshima, get off at JR Tadanoumi Station, walk about 7 minutes to Tadanoumi Port, then take a passenger boat or ferry for about 15 minutes.
