Shionomisaki Tourist Tower

Shionomisaki Tourist Tower is an observation tower standing 100 meters above sea level at the tip of Shionomisaki, rising from the large grassy field. Because this is the southernmost point of Honshu, you may often hear the place name "Shionomisaki" in typhoon weather forecasts. The horizon viewed from here draws a gentle arc, making it a special place where you can feel the curvature of the Earth. The exterior walls were repainted in 2012, but as the tower was built in 1960 (Showa 35), the entrance sign reading "Shionomisaki Tourist Tower" and the interior atmosphere still retain a nostalgic, old-fashioned feel. A restaurant is attached, where you can enjoy lunch such as farmed bluefin tuna dishes. There is also a shop selling Wakayama souvenirs, but another highlight not to miss is the "Honshu Southernmost Point Visit Certificate." The tower issues a commemorative certificate proving you visited the site—nice to take home as a keepsake. Access: take the JR Kisei Main Line to "Kushimoto Station," then ride the Kushimoto Town Community Bus and get off at "Shionomisaki Tourist Tower"—it’s right there.
