Reikado Temple

Reikado Hall is a hall that stands in front of the main hall on Mount Misen. Inside Reikado Hall, a fire said to have been lit when Kobo Daishi trained here in 806 still remains today. This flame is called the "Eternal Flame" and was used as the original flame for the "Flame of Peace" that continues to burn in Peace Memorial Park. In 2005, Reikado Hall was destroyed by a fire, but the "Eternal Flame" was preserved by transferring it to a lamp, so it survived safely. The current Reikado Hall was rebuilt in 2006. Along with the Eternal Lamp of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei and the Eternal Lamp of Risshaku-ji (known as Yamadera), Reikado Hall’s "Eternal Flame" is called one of Japan’s Three Great Eternal Sacred Lamps. Water boiled with this flame is said to be effective for all kinds of illnesses, so it is recommended to scoop water from the large tea kettle above the flame with a ladle, pour it into a cup, and drink it. Because the "Eternal Flame" continues to burn, Reikado Hall is certified as a "Lovers’ Sanctuary." If couples visit together, their love may deepen even more. Next to Reikado Hall, heart-shaped ema plaques are available, so write your wish and hang it inside Reikado Hall.
