Kawagoe Ichibangai Shopping Street

Kawagoe Ichibangai Shopping Street is a historic shopping district located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. What sets it apart from other shopping streets is the continuous row of traditional warehouse-style buildings stretching approximately 430 meters, featuring black plaster walls, heavy wooden doors, and tiled roofs with decorative demon tiles typical of the Meiji period. These fire-resistant kura-style buildings were constructed after a major fire in the Meiji era, creating a townscape designed to withstand flames. While the buildings may appear similar at first glance, each one has its own unique character, making it enjoyable to simply stroll and admire the scenery. One highlight is the Osawa Family Residence, built in 1792 and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The most iconic symbol of Kawagoe Ichibangai is the Toki no Kane (Bell of Time), which rings four times a day at 6:00, 12:00, 15:00, and 18:00, filling the street with its nostalgic sound. A popular way to explore the area is to enjoy Imo-Koi from Kasho Umon, a local sweet made with Kawagoe’s famous sweet potatoes and red bean paste, while walking through the street. Access to Kawagoe Ichibangai Shopping Street is easy by taking a Tobu Bus from JR Kawagoe Station and getting off at the “Ichibangai” stop. As you explore the street lined with tempting food shops, you may find yourself pleasantly full by the time you leave.
