Oarai Isosaki Jinja
Oarai Isosaki Shrine is a shrine famous for its three torii gates. It is said to have been founded in 856, when Okuninushi-no-Mikoto and Sukunahikona-no-Mikoto descended upon the sea at Oarai; on the seaside rocks stands the “”Kamiiso no Torii.”” Facing the majestic ocean, this torii has an awe-inspiring presence and is also popular as a first-sunrise spot. The “First Myojin Torii” stands on the approach road leading to the shrine; at 16 meters tall, it is among the notable large torii in the Kanto region. Continuing toward the shrine, you’ll reach the “Second Torii” at the entrance to the grounds. The shrine buildings were once destroyed in warfare during the Eiroku era, but reconstruction began under Tokugawa Mitsukuni (famous as Mito Komon), and in 1730 Tokugawa Tsunasato relocated it to the current site. The main hall and worship hall are designated cultural properties by the prefecture, and the shrine has long been revered for blessings such as household safety and maritime traffic safety. Access is about 2.5 km from the Oarai Kashima Line “”Oarai Station.”
