Okamoto Sengyoten
Okamoto Fish Shop is a hugely popular local seafood izakaya in Shimonoseki. Around lunchtime, many people come specifically for its signature seafood bowl (kaisendon). The famous kaisendon is piled high—so generous it nearly overflows the bowl—with about 15 kinds of seasonal seafood such as thick-cut fugu, yellowtail, kohada, salmon, salmon roe, sea urchin, crab, shrimp, and bonito. The key point of its popularity is that you can enjoy such luxurious seafood at a reasonable price. Inside, you’ll also want to see the large showcase lined with fresh seasonal seafood. Because it’s an izakaya run by a long-established fish shop, you can try the style of ordering by choosing what you like from the showcase and having the chef prepare it for you. Don’t forget the local specialty “fugu hire-zake” (hot sake with grilled fugu fin), too. Access to Okamoto Fish Shop: by public transportation, it’s about a 5-minute walk from JR Sanyo Main Line “Shimonoseki Station” East Exit, near Shimonoseki Station Hotel. By car, it’s about 15 minutes after exiting the Chugoku Expressway “Shimonoseki IC” (about 5 km).
