Mito Komon Zo
There are multiple statues of Mito Komon around Mito City, but the one that greets you first at Mito Station is the statue of Komon-sama standing between his companions Suke-san and Kaku-san. “”Mito Komon”” is another name for Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the second lord of the Mito Domain. He was known as a wise ruler who actively promoted classical studies and protected cultural properties, and was beloved by the people. The story of traveling the country to set things right with his companions is a later creation, but it reflects how admired he already was in his own time. At Mito Station, the two companions appear to be holding hats and keeping watch, while Komon-sama stands calmly in the center leaning on a long cane. The statue is close to life-size, and its costume and atmosphere strongly resemble the familiar TV-drama depiction. The pedestal is not very high, so you can step close and take a natural photo together in frame—perfect as a souvenir shot of your visit to Mito. The statue is located immediately outside Mito Station’s North Exit.
