Rurikouji Temple
Rurikoji is a historic temple often called “the Kyoto of the West,” with origins dating back to the Muromachi period. Its most famous feature, the Rurikoji Five-Story Pagoda, is regarded as a masterpiece among Muromachi-period structures and is counted as one of Japan’s Three Great Pagodas. Standing 31.2 meters tall, the pagoda is not flashy, but it is full of traditional Japanese charm and is registered as a National Treasure—making it a must-visit. The scenery around Rurikoji also changes beautifully with the seasons: in spring, about 170 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom in full; in autumn, vivid red foliage draws visitors from both inside and outside the prefecture. Access to Rurikoji: by car, it’s about 15 minutes from Chugoku Expressway “Yamaguchi IC,” and parking is available at Kozan Park. By bus, take a bus from JR Sanyo Shinkansen “Shin-Yamaguchi Station” and get off at “Kencho-mae,” then walk about 10 minutes. Or from JR Sanyo Main Line “Yamaguchi Station,” take the community bus (Ouchi Route) bound for “Kozan Park Gojunoto,” and get off at the last stop right nearby.
