Sandankyo Ravine

Sandankyo Gorge is a large canyon about 16 km long, with scenery that resembles a landscape painting. Its natural beauty is sometimes compared to Guilin in China. In the Edo period, Sandankyo was already known locally as a secluded scenic spot. It became widely known nationwide after photographer Nanpo Kuma and others began promoting it around 1918 (Taisho 7). The name "Sandankyo" was reportedly coined by Nanpo by taking one character each from "Sanga," "Sandan," and "Sankyo." The five main highlights are Nidan Falls, Sandan Falls, Mitsu Falls, Sarutobi, and Kurobuchi. Among these, Sarutobi, Nidan Falls, and Kurobuchi can only be reached by boat. Kurobuchi is a dramatic stretch where steep cliffs rise for about 100 meters. Its name comes from the fact that it was once the deepest point in the gorge and the bottom looked dark. "Kurobuchiso," the only dining spot in Sandankyo, is reached by the Kurobuchi ferry boat and serves items such as salt-grilled yamame trout and, in summer, nagashi somen (flowing noodles). Sarutobi, with 20-meter-high cliffs continuing along the sides, was named because monkeys were once said to leap between the cliffs. Traveling by boat through the narrowing cliffs brings you to Nidan Falls. Walking paths have also been developed along the stream, so a stroll while enjoying the fresh air is also recommended.
