Okunoshima Island

Ōkunoshima is known as "Rabbit Island" and is home to an estimated 900 to 1,000 wild rabbits. Rabbits are popular worldwide not only for their cuteness but also as symbols of safe childbirth and prosperity of descendants, so many tourists visit from Japan and abroad.
Because it is a small island with a circumference of about 4 kilometers, getting around is basically on foot, though rental bicycles are also available. The island is also well equipped for leisure. You can rent camping gear and grills on the island, making it possible to enjoy camping and BBQ while looking out over the Seto Inland Sea. In summer, you can also swim. Although Ōkunoshima is now designated as a national park, it once had a poison gas factory. To ensure that this tragic history and the many victims are not forgotten, the island also has a poison gas museum. Access to Ōkunoshima is about a 15-minute boat ride from Omishima Ferry’s Omishima (Mori Port), making it easy to visit as a day trip. There are also restaurants, hot springs, and accommodations, so you can take your time and stay longer.
