Experience details

Begin at the base of Daimon-zaka, where centuries-old cedar trees and moss-covered stones evoke the quiet dignity of the Kumano faith. As you follow the gently rising path, your guide shares the history of the Kumano Sankeimichi—the pilgrimage routes that once connected Kyoto’s imperial court to this remote mountain sanctuary.

Stop at Furigase Bridge and Meotosugi, where the border between the secular and sacred worlds was believed to lie. Reaching the top of the slope, the bright vermilion torii of Kumano Nachi Taisha welcomes you.

Here, your guide introduces the origins of the Kumano deities, the story of Nachi Gongen, and the deep meaning of purification in Shintō. Experience a traditional water purification ritual (temizu) and learn how faith in nature shaped Japan’s spiritual identity.

Next, visit Seiganto-ji Temple, standing gracefully beside the shrine. The temple symbolizes the centuries-long harmony between Shintō and Buddhism, and your guide explains the philosophy behind this coexistence as well as the influence of Shugendō—mountain asceticism unique to the Kumano region. You’ll have a moment to light incense or a candle before continuing onward.

Finally, descend to Hirou Shrine and Nachi Waterfall, one of Japan’s most iconic natural sanctuaries. The 133-meter cascade has been worshiped as a living deity since ancient times, representing both cleansing and renewal. Standing before the roaring water, you’ll feel the timeless awe that inspired generations of pilgrims to complete their spiritual journey here.
