Kenrokuen
Kenrokuen is a Japanese garden in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government. Alongside Korakuen in Okayama and Kairakuen in Mito, it is considered one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens. It has also received the highest three-star rating in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, making it one of Ishikawa’s sightseeing spots. The garden covers about 11.7 hectares, and it is said that Matsudaira Sadanobu named it “Kenrokuen” because it embodies six landscape qualities: grandeur, seclusion, human artistry, antiquity, water features, and expansive views. In particular, yukitsuri (ropes supporting tree branches to prevent breakage under snow) has become a seasonal symbol of Ishikawa. Within the garden are hills, ponds, and teahouses, making it ideal for a slow stroll while enjoying the scenery. Paid guided tours (about 50 minutes) are also available, and walking with a guide can help you understand more about Kenrokuen. Teashops and souvenir stands line the grounds, and you can even have breakfast while viewing the landscape. Access: from Kanazawa Station, about 15 minutes by bus; get off at Kenrokuen-shita / Kanazawa-jo bus stop, then about 3 minutes on foot. Seasonal light-ups are held at certain times, so it’s worth checking.
