Choshi Otaki Waterfall

Choshi Otaki Waterfall is the only waterfall located directly along the flow of the Oirase Gorge, a scenic 14-kilometer stream stretching from Nenokuchi on the shore of Lake Towada to Yakeyama. While Oirase Gorge is home to many waterfalls such as Kudan no Taki, Shiraito no Taki, Tomoshiraga no Taki, and Kumoi no Taki, Choshi Otaki alone sits squarely within the main river current. Measuring about 20 meters wide and seven meters high, its powerful volume of water has earned it the nickname "the Japanese Small Niagara." The force of the water is so strong that it prevents fish from swimming upstream toward Lake Towada, which is why it is also known as "Uodome no Taki" (Fish-Blocking Waterfall). Choshi Otaki is believed to have formed due to factors such as the inflow of the Kanzawa tributary. The waterfall can be enjoyed year-round, but the autumn foliage season and the winter frozen waterfall are especially spectacular. In summer, consider cooling off while feeling the refreshing spray of the cascading water. After visiting Choshi Otaki, be sure to stop by the nearby famous spot "Ashura no Nagare," often featured in guidebooks.
