Imari Okawa Uchiyama
Imari Okawachiyama is a secluded “hidden kiln village” surrounded by mountains, with scenery that evokes an ink-wash painting. It was once the site of a domain kiln (han-gama) tightly controlled by the Nabeshima clan, producing masterpieces of ceramics; its history has been recognized with designation as a national historic site. Following the mountain road, you’ll find old kiln ruins, ceramic art objects, and galleries exhibiting Imari ware, giving the entire town the atmosphere of an open-air museum. A must-see highlight is the sound of the “Meotoshi Tower,” where 14 Imari-ware wind chimes ring out—this spot is selected as one of Japan’s “100 Soundscapes.” In spring, summer, and autumn, pottery festivals are held, so visiting in time with these events is also recommended. Access: by public transportation, take a taxi about 6 km from JR Chikuhi Line or MR Nishi-Kyushu Line “Imari Station,” or take a Nishihi Bus bound for “Okawayamauchi,” get off at “Okawayamauchi,” and walk 1 minute. By car, it is about 30 minutes from Takeo-Kitakata IC (Nagasaki Expressway).
