Seikan Ferry “Hakkoda-Maru” Memorial Ship

The Seikan Ferry Memorial Ship Hakkoda-maru is a floating maritime museum that preserves the Hakkoda-maru, a Seikan ferry that connected Aomori Port and Hakodate Port for 24 years from 1964 to 1988. Among the 55 Seikan ferries that operated since 1908, the Hakkoda-maru boasts the longest service period. Measuring 132 meters in length and about 18 meters in width, the ship is easily recognized by its iconic yellow color. On the first deck, nine railway cars are displayed in their original condition, reflecting how freight trains were once transported by ferry before the opening of the Seikan Tunnel in 1988, when Aomori and Hokkaido were not connected by land. Passenger cars were not originally carried on the ferries, as passengers disembarked from trains before boarding, but one has been placed on board for exhibition purposes. Visitors can also explore the preserved bridge, engine areas, and the chimney observation deck with excellent views. After touring the Hakkoda-maru, enjoy shopping at the nearby A-FACTORY or visit Nebuta no Ie Wa Rasse to continue exploring Aomori’s waterfront attractions.
