Yuda Onsen
Yuda Onsen is a traditional hot spring area with a deep history said to span 600 years. In the late Edo period, it is said that pro-imperial samurai and court nobles stayed here. The “Ishin no Yu,” where figures such as Takasugi Shinsaku, Saigo Takamori, Okubo Toshimichi, Omura Masujiro, Sakamoto Ryoma, and Ito Hirobumi are said to have discussed strategies late into the night, still exists today—making it moving to know you can enjoy the same waters in modern times. The spring quality at Yuda Onsen is a mildly alkaline simple hot spring, with soft, smooth water that feels gentle on the skin. It boasts an abundant yield of about 2,000 tons per day, and despite being non-volcanic, the source temperature exceeds 70°C—something quite rare. The water is colorless and transparent, which is said to be due to the abundant volume. It is believed to help with neuralgia, joint pain, bruises and sprains, fatigue recovery, and general health promotion, and it has long been loved by many visitors. Access to Yuda Onsen: by public transportation, take the JR Yamaguchi Line from JR Sanyo Shinkansen “Shin-Yamaguchi Station” for about 15 minutes and get off at “Yuda Onsen Station.” By car, it’s about 10 minutes after exiting at Chugoku Expressway “Ogori IC” or Sanyo Expressway “Yamaguchi IC.” Some accommodations offer shuttle buses or free pick-up, so it’s best to confirm in advance.
