Experience details

Visit the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (DRI) in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Learn about the loss and damage caused by the earthquake, and the steps of recovery from that time to the present. Watch a video that recreates the atmosphere of the time of the earthquake.

About 30 years ago, at 5:46 a.m. on January 17, 1995, a massive earthquake with a maximum intensity of 7 struck the southern region of Hyogo Prefecture. More than 6,400 people died. The earthquake, which occurred directly under the city, left a huge mark on Kobe and other cities in the Hanshin-Awaji area.

The Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (DRI) was established to pass on the valuable lessons learned from the earthquake to future generations as a world-shared asset and to help mitigate the damage caused by earthquake disasters in Japan and abroad.

Upon entering the museum, visitors will first watch a video that recreates the atmosphere of the time of the earthquake. After watching the video, see exhibits related to the record of the earthquake and the footsteps of reconstruction, while listening to the guide's talk. Finally, learn what measures can be taken against natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
