Kure Municipal Museum of Art
Kure City Museum of Art is an art museum located within Irifuneyama Park in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Irifuneyama Park has been selected as one of the 100 Best Historical Parks in Japan, and the museum was created within it. Together with the Irifuneyama Memorial Museum in the park, it is a wonderful museum where you can feel art even from the building itself, which was constructed in Meiji-period Western-style architecture. Inside its distinctive structure—featuring a hipped Japanese-tile roof and unique brick-colored hexagonal tiles—the museum not only exhibits works mainly by artists from the local area, but also hosts various special programs and exhibitions on an ongoing basis. This area is also popular as a sightseeing spot, and it is recommended to visit it together with Irifuneyama Park, the Irifuneyama Memorial Museum, the Kure City Museum of Art, and the Former Residence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Kure Naval District. The former commander’s residence is also designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. There is a café inside the museum as well, allowing you to take your time and enjoy sightseeing at a relaxed pace. To get to the Kure City Museum of Art, it is about a 10-minute walk from Kure Station. The slope leading to the museum is called "Museum Street" and has been selected for honors such as the 100 Best Roads in Japan and the Handmade Hometown Award.
