Tsunoshima Ohashi Bridge
Tsunoshima Bridge is a 1,780-meter-long bridge connecting the mainland (Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) with the island of Tsunoshima, making it the second-longest bridge in Japan. Spanning the sparkling cobalt-blue waters of Amagase, its breathtaking scenery is considered one of Yamaguchi’s signature viewpoints. Opened in 2000, Tsunoshima Bridge is a top-class driving destination. The view transforms beautifully depending on the time of day, with daytime bringing a glittering, tropical feel. The magic hour at sunset is also stunning, and after sunset the bridge is illuminated, creating a wonderfully romantic atmosphere. While you can cross Tsunoshima Bridge on foot, there is no sidewalk and vehicle traffic is heavy, so great caution is required. Access by car is about 70 minutes from the Shimonoseki IC on the Chugoku Expressway / Kanmon Expressway, or about 60 minutes from the Mine-Nishi IC or Ozuki IC on the Chugoku Expressway. By public transportation, take the JR San-in Main Line for about 70 minutes from JR Sanyo Shinkansen “Shin-Shimonoseki Station,” get off at “Takibe Station,” then take a bus for about 30 minutes. Alternatively, from “Kottoi Station” on the JR San-in Main Line, take the Blue Line Kotsu bus bound for Tsunoshima for about 15 minutes, get off at “Nishinagato Resort Iriguchi,” then walk about 5 minutes.
