Cape Hedo
Cape Hedo is the northernmost cape of Okinawa’s main island, located in Kunigami District, Okinawa. On clear days, you can see islands of the Amami chain such as Yoron Island and Okinoerabu Island. The cape’s coral-based cliffs and the sight of rough waves crashing against them create a spectacular view. Kayauchi Banta, a cliff on the southwest coast, is named from a story that bundles of thatch thrown from the cliff scatter apart. On the north side of the banta is the Gina-mā underwater limestone cave, also called the Cape Hedo Dome—an underwater cave popular with divers, with shell mounds also found in the area. There are also sights such as Cape Hedo Lighthouse, the Yanbaru Kuina Observatory, the Okinawa–Yoron Friendship Monument, and the “Reversion to Japan Struggle Monument,” built as a symbol of Okinawa becoming part of Japan again. Cape Hedo is designated as part of the Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park, and with walkways and beautiful scenery, it’s easy to lose track of time. It is also known as a place where signal fires were lit in hopes of reversion, making it a place that invites thoughts of peace as well. Access: about 1.5 hours from Kyoda IC.
