A row of Fukugi trees in Bise
Bise Fukugi Tree Road is an avenue of Fukugi trees along the Bise coastline in Okinawa. The tree-lined path continues for about 30 minutes one way. It was planted as a windbreak and tidal protection forest—an example of Okinawan life wisdom. Thousands of trees are planted here, and some of the oldest are said to be over 300 years old. Traditional houses line the road and people still live there, so it’s best to walk as quietly as possible. Walking is recommended, but there are also rental bicycles. Because the Fukugi leaves are dense, it creates shade—so the expression “walking through a green tunnel” fits perfectly. When you emerge from the tunnel, you reach the sea, with views of Ie Island and extraordinarily clear water. There are cafés where you can take a break, and it’s also fun to look for beach creatures or collect seashells. Access is about a 5-minute walk from the Bise Iriguchi bus stop, and there is parking available.
