Fukuoka Castle Ruins
Fukuoka Castle Ruins are the remains of an Edo-period Japanese castle in Fukuoka City, designated as a National Historic Site. Ohori Park was created by utilizing Fukuoka Castle’s former outer moat. At the large main keep base (Daitenshudai), an observation area lets you view the cityscape of Fukuoka. The castle was built in the early Edo period by Kuroda Nagamasa, taking advantage of the hilly terrain. In spring, festivals are held, and at the Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival there is a parade featuring people dressed as Kuroda Kanbei (Yoshitaka), Kuroda Nagamasa, and the Kuroda Twenty-Four Cavalry. Nearby are sites such as the Ohori Park Japanese Garden, and in the moats a plant called Tsukushi-ogayatsuri grows naturally, making the area enjoyable year-round. The Kinen Yagura turret also remains and is designated a Fukuoka Prefectural Cultural Property. The complex stone walls and the Shimonohashi Gate (Shimonohashi Gomon) are must-see spots that evoke the castle’s former appearance. You can also learn more at facilities such as the Fukuoka Castle “Mukashi Tanboukan” (historical exploration center). Events like “Fukuoka Castle Samurai Riding” offer horseback riding while dressed as a samurai. Access is about a 5-minute walk from Ohori-Koen Station.
