Beppu Bentenike Pond
Beppu Benten Pond is a spring-fed pond famous for its mystical, crystal-clear cobalt-blue water and quiet, beautiful atmosphere. It has been selected as one of Japan’s “100 Exquisite Waters.” Water gushes out at an impressive 186 liters per second, and the water temperature stays around 14°C throughout the year. With exceptional clarity, the water feels cool, soft, and delicious. If you bring a container such as a PET bottle or water bottle, you can collect spring water for free (containers are also sold on site if you don’t have one). There is also a legend that “drinking one cup will add one year to your life,” and because of its mystical color, it is considered a “water power spot.” Not only is it used for agricultural and local daily water supply, but people also come from outside the prefecture to collect water. An adjacent fishing pond uses this water to raise rainbow trout, letting visitors easily enjoy fishing. Access to Beppu Benten Pond: by car, it’s about 25 minutes from Chugoku Expressway “Mine IC” via National Route 435 and Prefectural Route 31. If using public transportation, renting a car from JR Sanyo Shinkansen “Shin-Yamaguchi Station” is recommended.
