Izushi Brewery

Izushi Sake Brewery is a long-established sake producer in Izushi-cho, Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture, founded in 1708 (Hoei 5). Its retro sake storehouse with red earthen walls, dating back to the mid-Edo period, is a particularly popular sightseeing spot in Izushi. Access is via JR San’in Main Line Toyooka Station, then take Zentan Bus bound for Izushi, get off at the “Izushi Eigyosho” bus stop, and walk about 10 minutes. The signature label is “Sasazuru (Rakurasuru).” The name has a distinguished origin, combining “sasa no tsuyu,” another name for sake, with “Rakurasuen,” a villa of Lord Sengoku, the feudal lord of Izushi Domain. It is a dry sake with a gentle first sip, followed by a rich aroma and deep flavor. Tastings are available in the shop, making it an ideal souvenir from Izushi. Sweets made with sake—such as “Sasazuru Chocolate” and “Sasazuru Kimoto Junmai Sake Cake”—are also popular and worth picking up. The brewery also hosts “Sake Storehouse Concerts,” where visitors can enjoy music and sake inside the old kura, making it a well-loved local event in Izushi.
