Tanesashi Coast

Tanesashi Coast is a scenic coastline stretching about 14 kilometers from Kabushima in the west to Kanahama in the east. Within this area, a 12-kilometer section from south of Kabushima to Okuki, along with nearby coastal land, is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty by the Japanese government. Highlights of Tanesashi Coast include the "Tanesashi Natural Lawn," where natural grass extends all the way to the water’s edge; Osuga Coast, known for its "singing sand" that squeaks when you step on it; Ashigezaki Observatory near Samekado Lighthouse with sweeping Pacific Ocean views; and Kabushima, famous as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, along with Kabushima Shrine on the island. Near the Tanesashi Natural Lawn is the Tanesashi Coast Information Center, which offers exhibits and hands-on programs about the area, so it is a good place to stop before your walk. For getting around the coast, the "One-Coin Bus Umineko-go" is convenient, stopping at major sightseeing spots between Same Station (the closest station to Kabushima) and Tanesashikaigan Station on the JR Hachinohe Line. The bus runs daily from early April to early November, and on weekends and holidays from mid-November to late March (service is suspended during the New Year holidays).
