Asamadake Kongoshoji Temple
Kongoshoji Temple may not be widely known compared with Ise Jingu, which is famous as "Oise-san." However, Kongoshoji is historically very important, closely connected to Ise faith as "the temple that protects the northeast (kimon) direction of Ise Jingu." As the saying goes, "If you visit Ise, also ride up to Asama—if you skip Asama, it’s only half a pilgrimage," and it was customary to stop here and worship after visiting Ise Jingu. Still, access is not especially easy: it takes about 20 minutes by bus from the nearest bus stop, and about 20 minutes from Ise Expressway "Ise-nishi IC" via the Ise-Shima Skyline toll road. Because there are fewer visitors than at Ise Jingu, you can worship here in a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere. Highlights include the impressive Nio Gate, the main hall, and the Oku-no-in inner sanctuary. You can also receive a goshuin stamp, so visiting for goshuin collecting is another good reason to come. The Ise-Shima Skyline also offers breathtaking views of Ise Bay because there are no higher mountains around, and the grandeur of the scenery is striking. Near the summit is the Asama Mountain Observatory, which is also known as a famous spot for watching the first sunrise of the year.
