Asama Mountain

Mount Asama (Asamayama) is located within Ise-Shima National Park, and its beautiful mountain ridgelines have earned it a place among Japan’s 100 Scenic Views. The summit is especially famous as a first-sunrise (hatsuhinode) viewpoint, and on New Year’s Day it becomes so popular that even temporary parking areas can fill up completely. It is also well known as the home of Kongoshoji Temple, and because of the saying "If you visit Ise, also ride up to Asama—if you skip Asama, it’s only half a pilgrimage," many visitors come here after worshipping at Ise Jingu. Since the Ise-Shima Skyline toll road runs across Mount Asama, traveling by car is overwhelmingly the most convenient option. Be aware that regular buses generally do not operate except on weekends and holidays. Nighttime road closures are in place, so be sure to allow plenty of time in your schedule. There are also hiking trails, so you can enjoy trekking, but since the completion of the Ise-Shima Skyline, very few people hike routes other than the tourist-oriented Asamadake Trail that has been maintained for sightseeing. From the Mount Asama Observatory, you can enjoy spectacular views toward the Toba side. In particular, the grassy area known as the "Summit Plaza" is an outstanding scenic rest spot, making it a perfect place for couples to take a break and enjoy the panorama.
