Omi Island

Omi Island (Aomishima) lies within the Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park and is designated a National Natural Monument. Often called the “Alps on the Sea,” it is famous for a roughly 40 km coastal zone where sea caves, natural arches, and unusual rock formations line the shore. These dramatic landscapes were created by ancient volcanic activity, crustal movements, land uplift, and the erosion of powerful waves—an overwhelming natural beauty that could never be made by human hands. Because of its distinctive terrain, Omi Island is also known for unique marine life, making it a famous scuba diving destination and a dream spot for divers. To fully enjoy Omi Island, a sightseeing boat cruise is highly recommended, operated by Omi Island Sightseeing Steamship. The cruise weaves between cliffs and rock walls and passes through sea arches like an adventure—sometimes you may even encounter a pod of dolphins if you’re lucky. Access to Omi Island: by public transportation, from JR Nagatoshi Station take the Sanden Bus for about 30 minutes, get off at “Shizugaura,” then walk about 3 minutes. Alternatively, from JR Senzaki Station it is about a 5-minute walk (to the sightseeing boat boarding area). By car, it is about 50 minutes from the Chugoku Expressway “Mine IC.”
