Hachimanyama Ropeway
The Hachimanyama Ropeway is located about a 5-minute walk from Osugicho Bus Stop, reached by transferring to a bus from JR Omihachiman Station. The ride from the base to the summit takes approximately 4 minutes. From the observation deck at the top, visitors can enjoy sweeping views of Lake Biwa, Nishinoko Lagoon, and the ruins of Azuchi Castle. Historically, Mount Hachiman was the site of Hachiman Castle, built by Toyotomi Hidetsugu, and remnants of its stone walls remain today. On the former main keep site stands Murakumo Zuiryu-ji Temple, relocated from Kyoto. This temple was founded by Hidetsugu’s mother, Zuiri-in Nisshu-ni, to pray for his soul after his forced suicide following the birth of Toyotomi Hideyori. The temple grounds feature "Enmusubi Kawara," matchmaking tiles made from traditional Omihachiman roof tiles, where visitors can write wishes and dedicate them like ema for good relationships. In 2014, the area was certified as a "Lovers’ Sanctuary," and heart-shaped monuments and LOVE-themed objects have become popular photo spots.
