Hachiman-bori Canal
Hachiman-bori began as a canal (moat) dug for Hachimanyama Castle, built by Toyotomi Hidetsugu. By connecting it to Lake Biwa, transportation became smoother, greatly contributing to the development of Omi merchants and the prosperity of the town. However, as land transportation developed after the war, Hachiman-bori declined. In recent years, the boat landings have been restored and the surrounding area has been improved, and it has become a lively tourist destination again. In particular, the traditional roofed boats (yakatabune) are popular, and the area has been used as a filming location for works such as the movie Rurouni Kenshin and the NHK morning drama Asa ga Kita. On the yakatabune, you can travel a route from Koenbashi Bridge to Shinmachi-hama while enjoying the atmospheric scenery of old white-plastered walls and black-board fences lining the canal. Cherry blossom viewing is also possible in spring. Another must-see related to Hachiman-bori is the Kawara Museum, where you can learn about the local roof-tile industry. The nearest station is JR Omi-Hachiman Station; from there, it’s about 7 minutes by bus to Osugicho.
