Saga Castle Historical Museum
Saga Prefectural Saga Castle Honmaru Historical Museum was opened on the former Honmaru site of Saga Castle to help anyone understand, in an enjoyable and easy way, the position and realities of the Saga Domain from the late Edo period through the Meiji Restoration. The restored structure is based on the remaining palace layout, and at about 2,500 m² it is known as the largest reconstructed wooden building in Japan. The Saga Domain is also known as a leading force in Japan’s modernization, and exhibits from the domain’s perspective are especially interesting. The museum includes a shop, and its displays incorporate digital archives and library functions. Barrier-free design has progressed, allowing wheelchair users to view exhibits independently; wheelchairs are also available to rent. By public transportation, take a bus about 20 minutes from Saga Airport to Saga Station Bus Center and get off at “Hakubutsukan-mae,” then walk immediately nearby. By car, it is about 25 minutes from Saga-Yamato IC (Nagasaki Expressway).
