Tanzan Shrine

Tanzan Shrine is a shrine in Tōnomine, Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture. Before the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, it was known as Tōnomine Myōraku-ji Temple. The mountain name "Tanzan" (Kataraiyama), which gave the shrine its name, is said to refer to the forest where secret plans for the Taika Reform were discussed. The enshrined deity is Fujiwara no Kamatari, a central figure in the Taika Reform. His memorial pagoda, a wooden thirteen-story pagoda, is an Important Cultural Property and the oldest surviving example of its kind in Japan. The shrine precincts feature many Important Cultural Properties, including the Romon gate, main sanctuary, and gonden, as well as striking vermilion-lacquered buildings. The combination of lush trees and historic architecture is truly impressive. The shrine is also famous for autumn foliage, and its seasonal beauty extends to cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and snowy scenery in winter. To access Tanzan Shrine, take the bus bound for "Tanzan Jinja" from JR/ Kintetsu Sakurai Station, get off at the final stop, and walk about 3 minutes. The "Koi Shrine" (Love Shrine) is also popular: pass through the torii beneath the worship hall and walk along the "Path of Love" to reach the subsidiary shrine Higashi-den "Koi Jinja." It is believed to bring blessings not only for romance and marriage but also for better human relationships. Don’t forget to touch the "Musubi no Iwakura" sacred rock as well.
